Intussusception — A change in policy where management has been satisfactory

Summary

Since 1976 we have changed our policy on patients with intussusception admitted to Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin, Dublin. Where possible, hydrostatic reduction with barium enema is used as the initial means of treatment. Since this change in policy, 70% of our patients had attempted hydrostatic reductions, of which 51% were successful. There were no late recurrences or deaths in our series.

It is recommended that:

  1. 1.

Hydrostatic barium enema reduction should be attempted in childhood intussusception regardless of the duration of symptoms. Our only contraindication would be evidence of perforation or peritonitis.

  2. 2.

The procedure should be carried out by an experienced radiologist.

  3. 3.

Adequate resuscitation should be given before, during and after the procedure.
