Effect of a low dose estrogen-progestogen oral contraceptive on lipids and lipoproteins

Summary

Ten young women (mean age 22.5 years) were studied before and during treatment with a low dose oestrogen-progestogen oral contraceptive. Mean plasma cholesterol rose by a small but significant amount as did mean weight. However, there were varying individual responses to therapy. Mean triglyceride, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol did not change significantly. Thus it appears that any adverse effects on the vascular system of the newer low dose oestrogen-progestogen oral contraceptives cannot be explained in terms of their effects on plasma lipids.
