This communication records personal experience of caring for pregnant diabetic patients over a 28 year period (1951–1979). Three hundred and eighty-four women were treated during 739 pregnancies (759 infants). There was no maternal death. The over-all perinatal loss rate was 8.4%. The Caesarean section rate was 23%.

In the period January, 1975 to May, 1979, very strict diabetic control was demanded. During that time the perinatal loss rate was 5% in 181 viable infants. In the first 5 months of 1979 we have deferred delivery to 39 weeks in 15 selected cases. All these infants survived.
