Carbohydrate metabolism in patients after gastric surgery

Summary

The reasons for considering that abnormal glucose absorption may be present in the blind loop syndrome are given.

Eight patients after gastric surgery, without evidence of a blind loop syndrome were compared with eight patients with evidence of a blind loop syndrome. Glucose and insulin measurements were taken after a standard oral glucose tolerance test. There was an apparent trend of lower serum insulin levels in the latter group, but this did not reach statistical significance.

The probable explanations for these findings are discussed.
