Summary

THIS paper examines the time trends of the mortality rate of carcinoma of the colon and rectum in Ireland between the years 1950 and 1982. The results show a rising trend in the mortality of carcinoma of the colon, but not of the rectum. In an international comparison Ireland has the second highest incidence of carcinoma of the colon in males (20.7 per 100,000) and the fourth highest females (18.6 per 100,000). Ireland has the fifth highest incidence of carcinoma of the rectum in males (10.6 per 100,000) and the ninth highest in females (6.5 per 100,000).
