Summary
In forest damage surveys one is often confronted with data where neighborhood interactions of trees lead to spatial correlation. If the primary goal is to analyze the effect of covariates on the degree of damage, marginal regression models are a useful methodological approach to account for spatial correlation. Since this class of models has been mainly developed for binary response variables, we first present an extension to ordinal response variables. The proposed method is then applied to analyse ordinal forest damage data taken from aerial photographs. Results show that the appoach protects against biased or misleading conclusions, which generally will be drawn by naive application of commonly used maximum likelihood inference for independent observations.
