The “Central Treaty Organization” comprises Turkey, Iran, Pakistan and Great Britain. The USA is represented only in a few committees. CENTO is successor to the Bagdad Pact. The coup d’état in Irak in 1958, following which that country left the organisation, made the renaming necessary.

The Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Mr Z. A. Bhutto, declared for instance on August 1, 1964, in Karachi that the RCD-Agreement had nothing to do with CENTO.
