Summary

A prognostic model, which numerically simulates the effects of deep-sea mining on the geochemical conditions at the Peru Basin deep-sea floor, is presented. The model is based on an extensive set of pore-water and solid-phase field data, as well as on the numerical simulation of the undisturbed system. According to the model, deep-sea mining would induce oxidation front progression in the sea floor such as it has not occurred at that location for millions of years. Moreover, the return to geochemical equilibrium would require a time period on the order of centuries. The model result again raises questions concerning hazard assessment criteria. Should the effects of an impact be judged by absolute standards? Or should also more specific aspects, such as the circumstances and the historical evolution of the respective site, be taken into account?
