Summary
In systematic study of the transformation properties of Actinomycetes it was found that 17 of 76 species tested transformed progesterone to 16α-hydroxy-progesterone. The optimal conditions for this transformation were studied in the strainActinomyces globosus, with the following results:
-
(1)
The optimal pH for the given type of transformation was 6–7. At lower values hydroxylation was inhibited.
-
(2)
Under the given experimental conditions there was no basic difference between 24-to 72-hour cultures. Older cultures were not suitable.
-
(3)
The course of transformation was also influenced by the steroid concentration. Under the given experimental conditions the optimal concentration was 5–10 mg. progesterone/100 ml. medium.
-
(4)
Isolation yielded 19.85% 16α-hy-droxyprogesterone (calculated to the initial steroid).
