Summary

A study was made of the influence of various ions on the growth and formation of protease by the actinomyces Streptomyces griseus, in long-and short-term experiments. Growth of the culture, ascertained by the amount of dry substance, and production of the enzyme were stimulated significantly by K+ions. The concentration of K+ required for increasing the amount of dry matter is lower than the concentration required for influencing the formation of protease. The effect of potassium ions probably consists in influencing metabolism of the sugars, because their effectiveness depends on the presence of glucose in addition to a source of amino acids. Under conditions of short-term production of the enzyme, without the presence of external nutrients, the formation of protease is increased by Na+ as well as by K+. In this case the effect of these two ions is possibly related to the influencing of permeability.
