Ocean tidal loading displacement around Korean Peninsula

Abstract

Accuracy of various space geodetic techniques such as GPS and VLBI has been recently improved and the periodic deformation of the Earth due to lunar and solar tides, and the tide induced tidal loading on various parts of the Earth must be corrected. This problem becomes more serious in the areas where the tidal loading becomes enhanced due to coastal and topographic amplifications. Bay of Fundy (Canada) and Kyunggi Bay (Korea) are two such areas. In order to minmize the contamination of high precision geodetic measurements by tide related deformation, numerical representation of tides and tide induced deformation, are investigated and estimated in selected areas around the Korean peninsula. The radial component of displacements caused by the main (M2) semidiurnal tidal constituent was computed using a grid cell of 5 arc minute. The maximum radial displacement due to M2 semidiurnal tide in the Kyunggi Bay, Korea, reaches up to 1.8 cm.
