Summary
The one-pion-exchange model, modified to allow for initial-and final-state interactions, is applied to those inelastic two-body proton-proton scattering processes involving the excitation of the two lightest nucleon isobars. The model apparently overestimates theN *+ (1238) production cross-section, but gives a satisfactory account ofN *+ (1430) production.

In previous calculations the parametera has generally been assumed to be pure imaginary (absorptive). However a number of Coulomb interference experiments (6) have confirmed the existence of a substantial real part of the elastic amplitude, at least in the spinless approximation.
