Influence of ethylene on sprout development of seed potato

  • Published:
American Potato Journal Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Abstract

Stem growth of ‘White Rose’ cut seed potatoes, during exposure to ethylene concentrations up to 10 ppm for 2 weeks at 20 C, was markedly retarded and thickened. Development of the vascular system was abnormal, resulting in small xylem vessels. Root promotion was inhibited, but growth of lateral buds and roots became normal after removal from ethylene. Plant emergence was delayed by exposure of seed pieces to ethylene above 0.05 ppm.
