Summary

We have measured the absolute vertical integral and differential cosmic-ray single-muon flux at 3.6 GeV. The apparatus consisted of two 100 in. high iron absorbers placed between large counter arrays. The iron absorbers could be magnetized with current-carrying coils wrapped around term. The differential flux was obtained from flux measurements at different magnetic-field values. Adjacent counters were used to correct the data for cosmic-ray showers and to provide parallel counter telescopes to look for penetrating pairs due to μ,’s or quarks. The measured integral flux at 3.6GeV was (1.83±0.4).10-3/cm2.sr.s, and the differential flux was (l.28±0.25).10-3cm-2.sr.GeV.s. The showerless μ-pair flux was measured to be (0.58.10-6±0.58.10-5)/cm2.sr.s for pairs between 0in. and 30 in. apart, and (1.68 -10-6 ±1.68. 10-5)/cm2.sr.s for pairs between 30 in. and 60 in.
