An experimental model for studying the effects of uridine and inosine on renal circulation and function in the rat

Summary

The effects of uridine and inosine on blood pressure, renal plasma flow (RPF), intrarenal blood distribution, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and serum and urine electrolytes were investigated in the rat. Uridine constantly produced an elevation in blood pressure, an increase in RPF and an even greater rise in GFR, resulting in a significant increase in FF which was due to a prevalent constriction of the efferent arterioles. Inosine produced a short-lived pressor effect followed by a more prolonged fall of blood pressure. RPF and GFR increased significantly and to a similar extent so that there was no change in FF. It is suggested that these two substances may be involved in the vasomotor control of the kidneys.
