Conclusions

Lipase determination by enzyme immunoassay is a reliable method. The determination in serum and duodenal juice can be performed by this test. Serum lipase determination separates normal subjects from patients with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. An early stage of chronic pancreatitis can be suspected by an increased ratio of secretin-stimulated serum lipase. Lipase concentration in duodenal juice indicates different stages of decreased exocrine pancreatic function. It is a change of standardization of the secretin ceruletid test because duodenal juice can be stored and the results of different laboratories can be compared.
