“Seeds” of wild grasses: A major food of Southwestern Indians

Abstract

A search of the ethnobotanical literature revealed wild grasses to be a major food of Southwestern Indians. Oryzopsis, Sporobolusand Panicumwere shown to be especially important throughout the Southwest, though a large number of other genera were of local importance. Reasons for the preference of some species over others are discussed. The proportion of annual and perennial species used as food is equivalent to the proportions of annuals and perennials in the grass flora of the region.
