On thermodynamics of relaxation and creep processes in the theory of viscoelastic materials with fading memory

Summary

This paper is concerned with the thermodynamical theory of materials with fading memory exhibiting the creep and relaxation properties. It is shown that, once the current thermodynamical approach is followed, the second principle of thermodynamics implies for these materials further restrictions on the free-energy functional in addition to the well-known ones deduced in the general theory of materials with fading memory. The possibility of an experimental check of the current approach and the possibility of an alternative and more general approach are briefly discussed.

Riassunto

II presente articolo riguarda la teoria termodinamica dei materiali a memoria evanescente presentanti fenomeni di rilassamento e creep. Si dimostra che la procedura termodinamica usualmente seguita porta alla conclusione che per questi materiali debbano sussistere ulteriori restrizioni sul funzionale esprimente la loro energia libera, in aggiunta a quelle note dedotte nella teoria generale dei materiali a memoria evanescente. Si discute brevemente la possibilità di una verifica sperimentale delia validità della procedura termodinamica usualmente seguita e la possibilità di un approccio alternativo più generale.
