Summary
The background geometry in this investigation is given by the Schwarzschild metrie. The space-time region under consideration is that within the horizon plus that near but outside the horizon. A configuration of standard-candle sources on radial ingoing trajectories fills the region and provides an observer inside the horizon with optical data on frequeney shifts and intensity. The observer follows a similar radial trajectory making observations in a local Lorentz frame within what may be viewed as an empty cosmology of the Kantowski-Sachs class. At several positions of the observer’s inward journey, red-shifts and luminosity distanees for each direction on the observer’s past null cone are plotted as contours. Features associated with the optical effects include the anisotropy, as expected, with transverse blue-shifts and longitudinal red-shifts. In the general direction of the black-hole center, however, the observer erroneusly concludes that the higher red-shifts must come from either closer or more intense sources. An analytical formulation of the general-relativistic red-shifts and luminosity distances, together with geometrical optics upon the past null cone inside the horizon, is presented in some detail.

The Kruskal extension of the Schwarzschild metric (13). is not chosen here for the simple reason that it is not necessary. The Eddington-Finkelstein co-ordinates are sufficient to depict the «single-universe» spherical collapse, and generally give rise to simpler computations.

This nomenclature originates from the fact that outside the horizon the radial null trajectories are either outgoing or ingoing. Nonradial null geodesics are not so simple to classify when 2m<r<3m because of turning points. However, inside the horizon there are no turning points; thus the classification is invariant upon the null cone of any event in this region.
If β<274/2 for a particular null ray in the (−) class of Ω, then that ray may be extended into the past to spatial infinity. If β>27 4/2, then these rays must originate at a value ofR less than 3/2,i.e. r<3m. The entire history of these latter rays outside the horizon is confined to this region asT»−∞.
One of us (11). presented a preliminary analysis of the problem using eqs. (3.1) and (3.2). As might be expected, some statements in that reference were premature, particularly with regard to the appearance of blue-shifts. The correct statement on the latter is that blue-shifts always cover a certain portion of the observer’s celestial sphere, no matter what his position inside the horizon.
