Summary
The frequency of the different types ofCandida albicans infections in infants and children is increasing. Their clinical pattern varies from the localised mucosal infection to real septicaemia. The symptoms of these different clinical types are reviewed. Diagnosis is based on the discovery ofCandida albicans in the mucosa in localised infections and in blood or urine in the generalised ones.
Certain new “milieux” have made the identification ofCandida albicans much easier and quicker.
The pathogenicity of these infections is not very clear. Antibiotic treatment has been considered as one of the causes of their recent increase.
Nystatine is in both localised and generalised infection a very potent drug.
