Summary

Clinical and therapeutic aspects of acute bacillary dysentery in 140 children of both sexes have been studied. The presence of knee joint arthritis in a convalescing male child was an uncommon manifestation of the disease. The association of urinary tract infection in 10% of the caseduring the illness was of rare occurrence and of great concern in the management of acute bacillary dysentery. Comparative evaluation of the drugs revealed that ampicillin gave a higher cure rate (98.8%) than sulpho onamides (20%) and tetracycline (50%). morcover, non-responders to sulpha and tetracycline improved when shifted to ampicillin. Death was recorded in 3.5% of the cases among late admissions and who had associated malnurition and other complications.
