Summary
The introduction of classical charges in a non-Abelian gauge theory is studied. It is seen that, in order to construct a gauge-invariant interaction Lagrangian, it is convenient to couple the gauge field to a Dirac sheet attached to the classical charged-particle trajectory. The string joining charges of opposite signs can be made to acquire physical reality and carry energy and momentum on making suitable assumptions about the topological and symmetry-breaking properties of the vacuum. This leads to the usual stringlike picture for a hadron in which quark confinement is understood in terms of strings of colour flux between quarks.
