Two-component representations of an interacting Dirac electron. Interpretation of the mean operators

Summary

The Hamiltonian of a Dirac electron interacting with an electromagnetic field, when diagonalized by Foldy-Wouthuysen or Blount transformation, naturally leads to a new definition of the mean operators. But these new operators exhibit unadmissible properties. The Foldy-Wouthuysen definition is thus maintained, and the leading electric interaction term of the Hamiltonian is interpreted as coming from a shift of the charge centre, which is thus different from the mass centre.

L'hamiltoniana di un elettrone di Dirac che interagisce con un campo elettromagnetico, quando è diagonalizzata mediante una trasformazione di Foldy-Wouthuysen o di Blount, porta naturalmente ad una nuova definizione degli operatori di media. Ma questi nuovi operatori presentano proprietà inammissibili. La definizione di Foldy-Wouthuysen è cosí mantenuta e il termine principale d'interazione elettrica dell'hamiltoniana s'interpreta come derivante da uno spostamento del centro della carica, che è quindi diverso dal centro di massa.
