Summary
The introduction of classical charges (quarks) in aSU 3 gauge theory (colour) is discussed. It is seen that the requirement of a gauge-invariant Lagrangian density naturally leads to the introduction of two types of strings (bonds) joining charges of opposite signs. Such strings can be made to acquire physical reality and carry energy and momentum by requiring that the vacuum (state of lowest energy) has suitable topological and symmetry-breaking properties. A picture emerges in which quarks are bound to form hadrons if each pair is joined by at least one of the two types of bonds (strings).
