Summary
This paper shows that the combined requirements of positivity of the imaginary part and crossing-even nature make the imaginaryv ⋍ s —u axia a rather special direction for elastic forward-scattering amplitudes. A formal analogy exists in fact between such amplitudes and the hadronic part of the vacuum polarization, which allows the generalization of some theorems previously proved by Cornille and Martin, relating the real spacelike extrapolation to the asymptotic timelike behaviour. A stable approach to the latter is consequently proposed, and the specific example of proton-proton is considered as an application.
