An extremely-high-energy jet phenomenon with emission of a giant fireball

 • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento A (1965-1970)

Summary

A clean atmospheric jet with total energy 878 TeV was detected in the emulsion chamber No. 17 exposed at Chacaltaya, 5200 m above sea level. A significant feature of this event is the almost complete absence of cascade degradation in the air for observed individual showers. It consists of 117 γ-rays and 24 secondary jets in lead. It extends to a radius ∼3cm on sensitive layers which include half of the showers. This event stands close examination as a single interaction except for the two showers and for the fact that the production height is estimated to be 250 m above the apparatus by means of statistics of materialization of γ-rays during the passage through atmosphere. An average momentum is found
∼0.39 GeV/c. Standing on the fireball hypothesis, an invariant mass is obtained ∼70 GeV/c2 for the γ-ray part. The charge independence is shown and then the total invariant mass becomes ∼200 GeV/c2, which is consistent with the UH-quantum proposed in 1971. Both transverse momentum and energy spectra support that the UH-quantum decays successively into mesons through H-quanta.
