Summary
We examine the possibility of constructing a quantum field theory of the scattering of a system of hadrons, which lie on Regge trajectories, by associating the spectrum with a mass operator involving an internal co-ordinate. We show that, provided the construction ensures no tachyon states, the latter can be used to derive a causal bare theory, which leads to a generalized Feynman-graph expansion of theS-matrix. In an explicit example involving an oscillator mass spectrum and a generalizedϕ 3 interaction, the tree graphs are shown to be multi-Regge behaved. However, the latter is linked to unphysical infra-red singularities coming from the structure of the mass operator. We try to resolve the latter problem in the renormalization program, where we indicate that the theory is renormalizable and that loop insertions in the generalized propagator leave its structure basically unchanged. As far as the physical interpretability of the theory is concerned, we propose a solution, which merges the bootstrap idea with a quark model type mass spectrum.
