Summary
The derivation of the equation d′Q =T dS from the second law of thermodynamics is examined and it is shown how its range of validity may be extended to include states at the absolute zero of temperature. The adiabatic unattainability of absolute zero follows almost trivially, but it is shown that, in the deduction, it is necessary to assume the validity of a statement known to be equivalent to Nernst’s heat theorem.
