Analysis of peptidoglycan as a means in diagnostics of the genusActinomyces

Abstract

Analysis of the peptidoglycan component of the cell wall was used as a means for identification of the genusActinomyces. The peptidoglycan ofActinomyces meyeri was of the lysine type, whereas that ofCorynebacterium granulosum isolated from the same infectious material contained diaminopimelic acid. Analysis according to Park and Hancock was found to be sufficient for taxonomic purposes. In samples containing both diaminopimelic acid and lysine the presence of lysine indicated contamination of the wall with residues of proteins.
