Gastric acid, pH and pepsin in healthy and protein calorie malnourished children

Summary

A study of gastric analysis including pH, free acid and pepsin secretion following alcohol stimulation was conducted in healthy children and in children with marasmus and kwashiorkor. It was observed that all these parameters were significantly subnormal in marasmic and in kwashiorkor children as compared to the normals. This suggests that growth retardation resulting from PCM might impair gastric function because of reduction in the number of cells required for synthesis and secretion of these gastric constituents.
