The enlarged liver in diabetes mellitus: Its determination by percussion

Summary

  1. 1.

The physical diagnosis of the livers and the advantages of percussion as compared with palpation are presented.

  2. 2.

In many patients, particularly in obese individuals with high lying livers, percussion is the sole means of estimating liver size.

  3. 3.

By means of percussion of the area of liver dullness, hepatomegaly was detected in 44.5 per cent of 101 unselected diabetic patients.

  4. 4.

In the group of 45 cases with liver enlargement, 21 had insulin deficiency as evidenced by poorly regulated diabetes or acidosis; 11 patients had lipotropic deficiency as determined from the dietary history; the remaining 13 patients were obese mild diabetics.
