Ultrastructure of amianthoid fibers in osteoarthrotic cartilage

  • Published:
Virchows Archiv B

Summary

Amianthoid fibers up to about 700 nm thick were found in osteoarthrotic cartilage. Except for their thickness the ultrastructural morphology was similar to that of the native collagen fibril. Our findings support the idea that amianthoid fibers result from a falling together of pre-existing collagen fibrils with their alternating dark and light bands in register.
