Summary
The discoloration of the skin occurring with chronic excessive use of phenacetin is caused not only by pathological hemoglobin derivatives circulating in the blood, but also by coloured compounds found in the skin. These compounds are mixtures of yellow-brown lipids of a composition similar to that of the fat component of lipofuscin.
