A coupling phenomenon between mesospheric wind patterns and midwinter stratospheric warmings: Preliminary results

Lettere al Nuovo Cimento (1971-1985)

Summary

The behaviour of winds at Budrio (45° N, 12° E), near Bologna, in the upper mesosphere and the lower thermosphere during stratospheric warming events in the January 6–February 2, 1982 period, is examined. The zonal and meridional prevailing flow at an average height of 95 km reversed westwards and southwards in a period less than a week during a minor strat-warming, whereas the influence of these events on tidal fields is not completely clear. The change in the wind patterns of the meteor region occurred about in the time of the temperature rise observed at the 10 mb level. This work has been supported by the National Kesearoh Council of Italy, within the bilateral co-operation between Italy un United Kingdom.
