The II2 bubble chamber used as a low-energy neutron spectrometer and the application of this technique to the determination of the panofsky ratio

Summary

A hydrogen bubble chamber has been used as a neutron spectrometer for the 8.9 MeV « radiative » neutrons emitted in the capture of π- mesons by protons. These neutrons were detected by observing their recoil protons, and their energy was derived from the angles and ranges of the recoils. The neutron energy spectrum thus obtained exhibited a sharp peak (full-width at half-maximum of ∼ 0.7 MeV) at the correct energy. Two independent techniques were used to subtract background from this peak; they yielded the same result. The absolute detection efficiency was calculated from the known n-p cross-section and the dimensions of the chamber by a Monte-Carlo technique. When the net count in the energy peak is corrected by the detection efficiency and compared to total number of pions stopping in the chamber we obtain a value for the Panofsky ratio of 1.53±0.10. The neutron energy spectrum was further analyzed to determine the mass of the π- meson, yielding:m π-= (273.0±0.8)me. It is shown that the technique used here may he extended to neutron energies as low as ∼ 3 MeV.
