Signal-to-noise considerations in a nuclear magnetometer

Summary

The accuracy in relative measurements of magnetic field with unclear magnetometer depends basically on the signal-to-noise ratio in the sensing coil. This ratio is evaluated in this paper as a function of the coil’s geometrical parameters, and graphs are shown which allow the optimum geometrical dimensions to be chosen. In this way it has been possible to build a coil showing an effective signal to-noise ratio of 540 at amplifier output, with a sensing volume of water of 160 cm3 (amplifier bandwidth ≃ 10 Hz).

La precisione nelle misure relative di campo magnetico col magnetometro uneleare dipende in ultima analisi dal rapporto segnale-rumore nella sonda sensibile. In questo articolo si calcola questo rapporto in funzione dei parametri geometrici della bobina e si riportano delle curve che permettono di scegliere le dimensioni ottime della bobina. In questo modo è stato possibile progettare e costruire una bobina con cui è stato ottenuto in uscita dall’amplificatore un rapporto segnale-rumore di 540, con un volume sensibile di acqua nell’interno della bobina di 160 cm3 (la banda passante dell’amplificatore era di 10 Hz).
