On chemical formulae for metallic phases

Summary

A systematic arrangement of symbols for chemical elements in the formulae of metallic phases may prevent confusion. Additional symbols for values of thermodynamic dynamic variables may be added for a mnemotechnically advantageous and unambiguous phase designation. Special states of metallic phases such as metastability or stabilization by impurities may be designated by affixes to abbreviate wording. The word “system” has a different meaning in the theory of metals and in technological texts as compared with metallurgy. It appears logical to use the word “mixture” instead of “alloy system” and to replace the hyphen by an undetermined mole number index as a subscript to the last component of the mixture.
