Summary

The potato seab-gnat causes a significant loss to potato growers in Ohio every year.

Bight to twelve generations may develop during the growing season at Wooster, Ohio. The insect may overwinter in storage or in the field.

Damage may be done to potatoes in storage, to planted seed pieces, and to the tuber crop.

Four factors have been found to have a bearing on the control of the insect:

  1. 1.

    Seed treatment.

  2. 2.

    Crop rotation.

  3. 3.

The addition of organic matter to the soil.

  4. 4.

Proper adjustment of the pH value of the soil.
