Antibody formation in young rabbits immunized with erythrocytes

Summary

Litters of young rabbits of different ages were immunized with a suspension of foreign erythrocytes. In every case, including rabbits immunized on the first day after birth, antibodies were formed (demonstrated by haemagglutination) on the fifth day after immunization. Age had no influence on the rate of antibody formation. Irradiation of young rabbits with a dose of 350 r. 48 hours prior to immunization inhibited the antibody reaction.

The possible mechanism of this reaction is discussed.
