The influence of stem thinning on tuber size

Abstract

Stem thinning was tested on a collection of seedlings and varieties covering a range of maturities to see if an economic increase in tuber size could be induced.

Thinning to one stem did not improve yield of marketable tubers. Plants thinned to two stems showed some improvement since yields from two varieties and three seedlings exceeded the checks by an average of 8%; however, these amounts were not statistically significant.
