Abstract

The ability of microorganisms of the genusFlavobacterium to transform derivatives of the pregnane series was tested. The ability of all five test strains to hydrolyse ester groups present in the steroid molecule was weak or negligible. Three strains showed very strong ability to dehydrogenate the Δ5-3β-ol to Δ4-3-ketone grouping without splitting off the side chains or the 21-acetoxy-group (if present).
