Abstract
When π-electron systems twist, their polarizability commonly increases. In photo-excited states, dramatic charge shifts can develop when a twist of 90° produces two nearly degenerate π subsystems. We review here the literature on the subject that is particularly relevant to the development of polarization catastrophes.
