Turnip remains from Byzantine Sparta

Restos de Nabo del Periodo Bizantino en Esparta

Abstract

Charred parenchymous tissue was recovered from Byzantine levels at the site of Sparta, Greece. On examination, using morphological and histological characteristics it was identified as being turnip,Brassica campestris ssp.rapifera (Metzg.) Sinsk. This discovery is of great significance in the study of the site, and also of Byzantine economy.

Resumen

Restos biológicos para análisis medio ambientales fueron recuperados en la excavación de los niveles bizantinos del yacimiento de Esparta. Una de las muestras contenIa tejido parenquimatoso carbonizado identificado como parte de una raiz de Brassica campestris ssp. rapifera (Metzg.) Sinsk., es decir nabo. En este articulo se describen los restos carbonizados y se sintetiza elproceso de identificación seguido. La existencia de restos de este tubérculo en este yacimiento se explica en relación a los recursos alimenticios bizantinos y a Ia economIa del yacimiento.
