Summary

These studies were made to determine the effects of graftingper se as well as the influence ofSolanum rootstocks on flowering number and percentage of fruit set, number of seeds and seeds per fruit when grafted with scions of the Russet Burbank variety.

Single and double grafts were made in the greenhouse, using Russet Burbank for both stocks and scion, and also as an interstock in the double grafts. Menominee was used as a pollen source.

Russet Burbank scions were grafted onto five Solanum understocks, two of which were of non-tuber bearing habit. These were also compared with ungrafted Russet Burbank. Two greenhouse temperatures —70–75 F and 65–70 F—were used. Shoshoni and Menominee were used as pollen sources.

Graftingper se had no effect upon flowering, fruit set, percent fruit set, number of seeds and seeds per fruit.

Solanum maglia was superior as a rootstock to all other species in increasing flower numbers, fruit set, and number of seeds. There were no differences among the other species.
