Abstract

Fine needle aspiration cytology was utilised to diagnose five cases of primary malignant fibrous histlocytomas of the lung out of 871 cases of malignant pulmonary tumour (either as giant cells in clumps or scattered). Histological findings of the excised specimens confirmed the cytological diagnosis. Sputum cytology and brushing cytology do not yield tumour cells. Surgery, either lobectomy or pneumonectomy is the treatment of choice in resectable cases. Less then 25 cases of primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the lung are published in the English medical literature. Our experience with the diagnostic role of FNAC prompted this paper.
