Effect of the opaque-2 gene and outcrossing on characteristics of the kernel protein and lysine in maize

Abstract

Outcrossed opaque-2 kernel weighed significantly higher than the sibbed ones, however, outcrossed kernels (±/O2/O2) weighed less than normal (±/±/±). Opaque-2 out-crossed and normal kernels do not differ with respect to percent protein, lysine as percent protein, lysine as percent sample, protein weight per ear (g) and lysine weight per ear (g). Opaque-2 sibbed (O2/O2//O2) was higher than opaque-2 outcrossed (±/O2/O2) and normal (±/±/±) for the above protein characteristics.
