Conclusions

The outlook for the perique tobacco industry in St. James Parish, Louisiana, is uncertain. The tobacco presently has a stable market throughout the world and enjoys the position of being a high-value product with no competition from other producing areas. The tobacco farmers in St. James Parish are skilled in the production of perique and consistently produce a high quality crop. However, the high price of perique has resulated in a market which is stagnant, rather than expanding, and continued price rise could put the tobacco beyond the economic reach of most consumbers. Also, recent attacks of an unidentified disease have threatened to end tobacco production altogether. If this disease can be controlled, and if the price can be held or lowered so that the market is maintained or, hopefully, expanded, then the perique tobacco industry will continue to flourish in St. James Parish.
