Datura innoxia— a potential commercial source of scopolamine

  • Published:
Economic Botany Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Abstract

The drug scopolamine is important, among other uses, as a pre-anesthetic in surgery and childbirth, in ophthalmology and in prevention of motion sickness. Datura Metel of Asia and Africa has been regarded as the best source of it, but a pharmacognostic study, reported here, indicates that D. innoxia of Latin America is a possible industrial source.
