Abstract
A description of some woodless plant communities occurring in the central part of the Isla de la Juventud is presented. Most of the communities originated fromPinus forests. The substrate is formed by oligotrophic white sand. According to the plant composition and the corresponding water regime, three classes were established in the area under study: theHydrolaeetea nigricaulis Balátová-Tuláčková 1985; theParvirhynschosporo-Eriocauletea Borhidi inBalátová-Tuláčková etCapote 1985 and theCuratello-Byrsonimetea Borhidi exBalátová-Tuláčková etSurli 1983. The communities of the first class, poor in species, are bound to periodically inundated depressions. The second class, theParvirhynchosporo-Eriocauletea, includes communities occurring in area with inundations shallower than those in the first class. The third class, theCuratello-Byrsonimetea, includes savanna communities of periodically dry sites.
