A cost analysis of banding versus broadcasting fertilizer on potatoes

Abstract

Broadcasting fertilizer before planting often gives similar yields to banding the same amount of fertilizer at planting. On farms of 200 ha or more, where economies of scale can be realized, it should be both convenient and profitable to use broadcasting. On smaller farms there seems to be little, if any, advantage unless there is a co-operative spreading operation or a multi-farmer custom contract.
